2011 — The birthday laptop, and the iPad I wanted

163 words

In this year

For my birthday in 2011, I got a Toshiba Satellite laptop. But I wanted an iPad 2!

My parents thought the money would be better spent on a laptop. The Toshiba was a 17.3-inch P775D-S7230 running Windows 7 Home Premium. It was the machine I would later compare with my little 11-inch MacBook Air—and the Air would completely change what I expected from a computer.

The Toshiba’s specifications
  • Model: Satellite P775D-S7230
  • Processor: AMD A6-3400M
  • Memory: 6GB DDR3 1333
  • Storage: 640GB hard drive
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6520G
  • Display: 17.3-inch, 1600 × 900
  • Operating system: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

But I wanted the iPad 2 #

That was the device I had my heart set on. Looking back, it helps explain why I was drawn to the Transformer Prime the next year: I was still looking for the tablet experience I wanted from the iPad.

These reference images bring back the products from that moment, including Steve Jobs presenting the iPad 2.
